| How
to Establish a CADGIS Student Web Site |
| CADGIS
is operating a web site for its student users to display their school work.
Any student user of the CADGIS Lab is eligible. In order for the lab to
create a web site, the student must have a faculty member "sponsor"
the student's website. The faculty member should send a request to the CADGIS
Lab via email giving the student name(s) and PAWS account(s). Once the
request has been processed, the lab will respond to both the faculty member
and the students informing of the status of the request via email. |
| |
| How
to See the Student's Web Pages from the World Wide Web |
When
a request is granted, the CADGIS administrators will create a folder named
"website" in the student user's CADGIS users directory. To this
folder, the administrators will connect a virtual directory from the main
web site at http://students.cadgis.lsu.edu. The virtual directory will have
the same name as the student's login or PAWS account. This "virtual
directory" will appear as a directory underneath the http://students.cadgis.lsu.edu
web site. To illustrate by using the user mtiger as an example,
\\lsu.edu\cadgis\users\mtiger\website
|
| would
appear as on the web as |
http://students.cadgis.lsu.edu/mtiger |

| Instructions
for Students Creating Their Web Sites |
Students
must follow the directives below for creating successful web site. |
|
1) The folder holding the materials for their website must reside
in a folder named "website" in their CADGIS users folder. (In CADGIS,
this folder is mapped to the "My Documents" folder and the
Z: drive.) |
|
2) There must be a file named one of following names as a home page:
default.asp, default.htm, default.html, index.htm, or index.html.
This file MUST reside in the website folder. It can
not reside in a subfolder. |
| 3)
All files that the students' websites use MUST be
in the website folder or in subfolders of the website folder. Such
files include image files, html files, text files, flash files, animations,
etc. Files outside the website folder will not be seen by the web
server. |
|
4) The website folder is read-only by the website. The web server
will NOT allow student web pages to write files to
either the website folder or any other folder. |
|
5) All file references should be relative to the web site as denoted
by a single slash (/). File references SHOULD NOT
include drive letters such C: or D: and SHOULD NOT
contain machine names such as \\CADGIS-lafitte. |

Usage
Policy |
| All
students that publish web pages under this web site must abide by the
LSU
Computer Usage Policy. Furthermore, all students that publish web
pages under this web site must abide by copyright laws. Failure to follow
the computer usage policy or copyright laws will result in CADGIS deleting
the virtual directory to the student's website folder which will prevent
the student's web site from being published. |
